The Language of Mathematics – Professor James Gleeson, University of Limerick

Professor James Gleeson, Co-Director of MACSI, Department of Mathematics and Statistics, University of Limerick talks about the language of mathematics.

Mathematics is a language: the language of science, technology, finance, and industry. I’m part of a group of applied mathematicians who focus on solving real-world problems, using the language of maths. We work closely with industry, and we organise problem-solving workshops that bring together mathematicians from all over Ireland, and Europe, to work on industrial problems.

Over the past 2 years MACSI researchers have helped Bord Gais to monitor and predict gas demand to ensure a reliable supply of gas. And we have developed a mathematical model to ensure sufficient supplies of O-negative blood for the Mid-Western Regional Hospital. We have even helped Phillips to produce a better cup of filter coffee!
