Ordinary language and conversation already does a great job of making us alter our internal representations of the world. From linguistics we know that we create our personal experience of the world through a process of deletion distortion and generlization. We do this as otherwise we would’nt be able to process everything in our direct experience. It would be sensory overload.
Deletion occurs when we simply filter out the information that falls out with the scope of our focus. As you are reading this how much are you not paying attention to? That could be your body sensations, some noise outside or something in your peripheral vision.
Similarly we distort or imagine things on a daily basis. Every building erected was once merely a thought, probably held by the architect or planner as he surveyed the original site. As he/ she surveyed they would distort the reality in front of them to imagine the future building plans.
Equally two people may encounter a mouse. If one of these people runs off scared we can assume they have distorted the internal representation of the mouse considerably differently from the other person. Also, when you think about it, every day dream we have is loaded with sensory-rich information so we are already very adept at ‘going inside’ and imagining the world differently.
Generalization occurs when we group and categorize information. If we experience anything a few times we naturally believe that that same experience will largely hold true. For instance believing that there is ‘always’ going to be a queque at the shops, there is ‘never’ a good moment to talk to your boss, ‘every’ mistake yields an important lesson, ‘all’ cars made before 1990 are unreliable. And so on ad infinitum. This is just a natural way that we process information.
The point is we are already perfectly capable of programming ourselves with beliefs, sometimes silly, sometimes positive. Therefore, to suggest that we can subtely alter or divert people’s attention, behaviour or beliefs with the mere use of language is not really saying anything new. Everyone employs powerful persuasion techniques on a daily basis.
By simply recounting a vivid anecdote to a friend you will be manipulating their internal representations as they seek to make sense of what you say whilst their focus and awareness is drawn into your story. What you say may also serve as a metaphor or provide them with an unconscious lesson.
So in actual fact there’s no such thing as conversational hypnosis, just.. conversation and natural persuasion techniques.
A skilled user of language can notice the structure and patterns of language that have the greatest effect on the recipient. By mastering these it is possible to direct language for a specific purpose and outcome. With some practice these patterns become easily integrated into our everyday language and become effortless to deploy. So when you consider that you are already influencing and ‘manipulating’ people with your language does it not make sense to gain more control and focus over this process?
With more control you can engineer more rapport, cooperation and influence in many situations. This is true mastery of persuasion skills and persuasion techniques.
