Music as Communication Technology
Music has always been a part of society. It is the one art that is ingrained within all cultures more than any other. Music and media have always been interrelated, whether it be posters advertising a band’s concert, music being heard in a commercial, or people sharing music through p2p programs and social media. The aim of our presentation is to illustrate the connection between music, social media, and technology and culture throughout history. We cover the beginning in the 1950’s and end in the present day. The things that are discussed include: social media giving fans access to artists, new technologies creating new music (which in turn creates new subcultures), social media creating artists and social media influencing music culture. The meaning behind this presentation is to show that a cultural institution such as music is entirely subject to the changes in technology and social attitudes outside of music.
